ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE
Unique in Europe, the International Harp Ensemble offers an incomparable opportunity to experience the timeless fascination of the harp. Founded by award-winning solo harpist Luisa-Maria Cordell in 2001, the International Harp Ensemble now numbers 33 harpists of all ages. All are dedicated to bringing ‘the magic of a thousand strings’ to a wider public.
“My object in founding the Ensemble was to bring this magical and mysterious instrument ‘out of the closet’ and to make it available to a wider audience,” explains Luisa-Maria. “I wanted to show the instrument in all its variety. Our repertoire is firmly grounded in the best traditions of classical harpistry, but we also have a modern side. Coldplay and the theme to The Pink Panther feature on our set list alongside Debussy and Ortiz.”
Renowned international harpist Marisa Robles has spoken of the “simply beautiful and passionate playing” of the Ensemble. Isabel Buxton, a producer for BBC TV’s Blue Peter, on which the International Harp Ensemble appeared in its 2007 Christmas Special, echoes her sentiments: “The performance was a truly magical highlight of our Christmas show and the skill and professionalism that the children displayed in a pressured live studio environment was superb.”
The International Harp Ensemble tours widely both in the United Kingdom and abroad, and has delighted audiences at venues as varied as The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, Guildford Cathedral, Farnham Maltings, Leicester Picture Gallery, St Asaph’s Cathedral (Wales), Ghent Cathedral (Belgium), Faro Conservatoire (Portugal) and the Jardin du Luxembourg (Paris). )ne of the group’s recent tours, in August 2008, took them to Albi in the south of France, where they performed in the spectacular mediaeval Cathedral to a capacity audience of 600. They are making a return appearance there in August 2012.
Besides touring, appearing on TV and radio and participating in specialist harp symposia,
the International Harp Ensemble takes pleasure in setting new records. In 2006, Luisa-Maria’s harpists joined forces with harpists from Wales to create the largest ensemble ever to perform in a Welsh Castle. The following year, the Ensemble chalked up another historic first by performing at the top of La Grand Arche in Paris, the signature building of the modernistic La Défense area of the city.
The International Harp Ensemble’s broad range of interests are rounded off by numerous
fund-raising activities in support of charities such a Cancer Research, Meningitis Research and Leukaemia Research, for whom the group has raised thousands of pounds. The Ensemble’s unique style and rich repertoire are perfectly showcased on their three CDs, The Magic of a Thousand Strings Volume I , II and III
